Chapter 4

Renunciation of Action in Knowledge

ज्ञानकर्मसंन्यासयोग
42 verses
Krishna opens a door into time itself. He taught this yoga at the beginning of creation, to the sun-god Vivasvan, who passed it to Manu, who passed it forward through a lineage of sage-kings, until the weight of ages wore it away. Now he gives it again, to Arjuna, not because Arjuna is the most learned but because he is a friend who does not carp. Arjuna is startled: you were born in this age, Vivasvan at the dawn of the world — how is this possible? Krishna answers quietly: you and I have passed through many births. I remember every one of them. You do not. He reveals the rhythm of his own descent into the world. Whenever dharma fades and its opposite rises, he sends himself forth, age after age, to guard the good and set the balance right. Then the teaching turns to the mystery of action. Even the wise stumble over the line between action and inaction. The secret is that real stillness can live inside real work, and real work can live inside what looks like stillness. The one who sees this does all work, yet does nothing. Krishna describes many forms of offering — breath poured into breath, the senses offered into restraint, wealth, austerity, knowledge itself fed into the fire — but insists that the offering of knowledge outweighs them all, because in the end all action ripens into knowing. The chapter closes with a command: take the sword of knowledge and cut the doubt from your heart. Whatever confusion sits in you right now — about who you are, about what you should do — knowledge is the blade that clears it. Pick it up.
