Chapter 3

The Yoga of Action

कर्मयोग
43 verses
Arjuna catches what looks like a contradiction: if wisdom outranks action, why push me into this terrible fight? Krishna answers by closing the gap between the two. No one sits idle even for a moment. Nature's own forces drive every creature to act, and the person who sits still while the mind chews on pleasures is only pretending. Refusing to act is itself an act, and a dishonest one. The honest path is action without clinging. Work done as offering keeps the great wheel turning; work done for personal gain is theft from the cycle that sustains everything. Krishna reveals that even he, with nothing left to gain in any world, never stops working, because if he did, people everywhere would follow his example and the world would collapse. The wise act as fully as the unwise. The difference is that the wise do not cling. Nature's three forces do all the doing; the ego simply claims credit. Once you see forces moving among forces, the grip loosens on its own. Then Arjuna asks the question everyone asks: what drives a person to do wrong even against their will, as if shoved from behind? Krishna names the enemy plainly — craving, and its twin face, anger. Born of restlessness, feeding endlessly, never satisfied, it veils knowing the way smoke veils fire. The cure is not to fight craving on its own level but to master the senses, then the mind, then to know the self that stands above even understanding. You do not defeat craving by white-knuckling your way through the day. You outgrow it by standing in the part of you it cannot reach.
