What the Gītā says about ego

Nobody wakes up and decides to be run by ego. It happens the way fog happens — it fills the view before you notice the view has changed. Krishna calls it ahaṁkāra, the I-maker, and locates it precisely: it is the voice that says I am the doer when nature is doing all the doing. That misidentification is the root. From it grow pride, force, arrogance, and the need to be seen — the whole list Krishna reads out as he closes the teaching. What makes these verses unsettling is how ordinary the trap is. You do not need to be a tyrant to be caught. You only need to believe that the effort is yours alone and the result proves your worth. Krishna says it does not.
