Commentary

Krishna has already said: reflect, and do as you wish. He said it, and then he cannot leave it there. He speaks again — not because Arjuna missed something, but because love does not stop at the last necessary word. Notice the reason given. Not that you have earned it, not that you asked well. You are dear to me. The deepest secret of the Gītā is released by affection, not by qualification. Everything Arjuna hears in the next two verses rests on this one line. Someone wanted to tell you. When you are spoken to that way, listen differently.

Frequently asked

What does Bhagavad Gita Chapter 18 Verse 64 mean?
Krishna says he will speak once more, and gives his reason plainly: Arjuna is dear to him. The teaching had already been completed and Arjuna left free to choose. This verse reopens it out of love alone, and prepares the ground for the final, most intimate words of the Gītā.
What does sarva guhyatamam bhuyah shrinu me paramam vachah mean?
Hear again my highest word, the most secret of all. Krishna has spoken of guhya and guhyatara already; here he reaches guhyatama, the deepest. Not a new doctrine, but the same truth spoken closer — the way something long known is finally said aloud to one person.
Why does Krishna repeat the teaching after already finishing it?
Because completion is not the same as intimacy. He had given Arjuna the whole of knowledge and full freedom to act. Then he speaks again — dṛḍham iṣṭo 'si me, you are firmly dear to me. What follows is not information Arjuna lacked. It is a relationship being named.
What does it mean that Arjuna is dearly loved by Krishna?
It means the highest secret is not a reward for merit. Arjuna has just spent seventeen chapters confused, grieving and resistant. He is loved anyway, and the loving is what opens the last door. You are not being taught at a distance. Somebody wants you to hear this.
