Touch the sky

The Air Force motto is from the Gītā. Arjuna said it while shaking with fear.

Nabhaḥ spṛśaṃ dīptam, touch the sky with glory, is the motto of the Indian Air Force. It comes from Bhagavad Gītā 11.24.

In the verse it is Arjuna speaking, and he is not boasting. He is describing Kṛṣṇa’s universal form, touching the sky, blazing, many-coloured, with vast shining eyes, and he says: seeing you, my inner being trembles. I find no steadiness and no peace.

The words a nation’s pilots carry were first spoken in fear.

Every pilot carries Arjuna’s fear, and flies anyway.

Ask the Gītā your own question.

Arjuna asked his. Samvāda answers yours with the Gītā's own verses.

Samvāda is software, an AI companion tuned to the Bhagavad Gītā. It is not a person. It answers from the verse and shows you which one, and it never pretends to be Kṛṣṇa.

When I behold You touching the Supreme Heaven, shining, multicolored, with yawning mouths and large, resplendent eyes, my inner being trembles in fear. I am unable to find support or peace, O Vishnu.

Going deeper

Chapter 11 is the vision of the universal form, and 11.24 is Arjuna's reaction while he is looking. The words are his, not Kṛṣṇa's. He sees the form touching the sky, blazing, many-coloured, with open mouths and wide, glowing eyes, and says his inner being trembles and he can find neither support nor peace. 11.23 has already said that the worlds tremble at the sight and that he trembles too. 11.25 goes further, describing fangs and mouths like the fire at the end of time, and Arjuna asks the Lord to be gracious. The words that became a motto belong to a description of fear. They do not come from a person who is sure of himself. They come from a person who is shaken, keeps looking, and goes on to ask for grace. The whole scene is in chapter 11, and what the Gītā says about fear gathers other verses.
